Shiatsu Massage: (shi meaning finger and atsu meaning pressure) is a type of massage consisting of finger and palm pressure, stretches, and other massage techniques.
This Japanese style of massage has a very different ‘feel’. The massage does not use massage oil, and it does not even directly touch your skin. Direct pressure with the thumbs, palms, knuckles, forearms, even knees and feet are used to stimulate and relax specific points on the body. Pressure is sometimes applied rhythmically along the length of muscle attachments; where muscles become tendons and attach onto bones. Massage with knowledge of muscle origins and insertions is very effective for overall circulation stimulation and results in dramatic pain relief.
Classic (Swedish) Massage: Swedish massage uses five styles of long, flowing strokes to massage.
The five basic strokes are effleurage (sliding or gliding), petrissage (kneading), tapotement (rhythmic tapping), friction (cross fiber) and vibration/shaking.
This style massage is accomplished by rubbing the muscles in the direction of blood returning to the heart. But Swedish massage therapy goes beyond relaxation. Swedish massage is exceptionally beneficial for increasing the level of oxygen in the blood, decreasing muscle toxins, improving circulation and flexibility while easing tension.

It gets to the heart of a muscles problematic nature and breaks down scar tissue to begin the regeneration of injured malfunctioning tissue. The deeper pressure is beneficial in releasing chronic muscle tension. The focus is on the deepest layers of muscle tissue, tendons and fascia (the protective layer surrounding muscles, bones and joints).
Deep tissue massage can break up and eliminate scar tissue from previous injuries. A common problem is that stressed muscles can block nutrients and oxygen from getting to where they need to go, and this will cause inflammation that allows toxins to build up in your muscle tissue. The inflammation and toxins contribute to pain and stress. Deep Tissue Massage breaks up and releases the built-up toxins by loosening the muscles.
